Moms Don't Abandon Your Children--I'll take 'em (Nebraska's Dumb "Safe Haven Law")

A Smyrna mother traveled nearly 1,000 miles to abandon her 12-year-old son at a Nebraska hospital Saturday night, authorities said.

Tysheema Brown, 33, left her child at BryanLGH Medical Center East at 9:50 p.m., said Chief Tom Casady of the Lincoln, Neb., Police Department. Brown was allowed to leave her offspring at a hospital without threat of prosecution. Nebraska's "safe haven" law, unlike those in other states, has no upper age limit.

Todd Landry, director of the Division of Children and Family Services for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, said in a statement that the boy has been placed in a residential shelter. State officials are gathering information from Georgia and Nebraska, Landry said.

Nebraska's safe haven law was intended to protect children who are in immediate danger of being harmed. It took effect in July.

Under the law, 20 children ranging in age from 1 to 17 years have been abandoned in the state since Sept. 13, Landry said. Sixteen youths were older than 10.

Brown's son has been in lots of trouble and she said she had no wear else to turn. Details of the mom's perspective can be found here at Channel 46, CBS, Atlanta.

WHERE'S THE CHURCH????????? Why don't people think about the church? Why didn't she turn to a church for help?

Example number 224,226,495 of the unintended consequences of government offering to solve everyone's problems. Again, why do people believe that government has the best plans?

This is ridiculous, ladies. If you don't want your sons I'll take 'em. Or the church. We take difficult cases. Jesus does it everyday. But, this is crazy!!!!! Crazy.

How is this a "safe haven?"

This is yet another example of how the government often makes bad policy because they believe people are basically good.

I don't understand how you could make a law saying anyone could abandon their kids up to age 18 with no penalty and not forsee some of this stuff.

What comes to my mind is how truly hard good parenting is, how daily, how isolating, how good but difficult it is, and how it can only be done by the grace of God. You know that mother did not look that way 12 years ago when her son was born. No, I would bet good money that she chose his name with care, she introduced him in his cute baby stuff to all her friends and family, she wrote his name and dreamed about his future. And then----life happened. And slowly but surely, all of those dreams evaporated, and she got to the point of thinking her only recourse was giving up and driving him to a "haven" and getting back in her car and driving away from the failure of her dreams. I weep for that child and I weep for that mother. And yearn for redemption even still, in the midst of all the bruising and heartache. It's a redemption that comes through Christ and His church family, because Jesus is the One who said, "Behold, I am making all things new!" And our families - like this sad family - desperately need something new.

Blacks are such a burden on society.

Tim D, this has nothing to do with this family being black, it has to do with a single parent who is desperate and not seeing any other option. As javahead said, it is a story of brokenness, a story in need of redemption. the story of all of our lives.

Spare me the Jesus mumbo jumbo.

Tim, really don't hold back, tell us how you really feel.

My husband and I would love to add another child to our family and wish that instead of abandoning their children, that people would 'give' their child to a family that would love, care and provide for him/her. Kind of like free adoption, if people are that desperate.. they should give their child to a family that is desperate to have another child! Just legally declare the family as the legal guardian, give up your rights and walk away. Don't hurt/murder/abandon your child!!! We would love to take in a child that is at risk of being abandoned.
