Anthony Bradley On YouTube--"How Not to Help the Poor"

Please send this clip to unconstrained vision folks who believe that government is the best way to deliver help to people in need. If there's one lesson from the "war on poverty" programs the US government instituted in the 1970s it is that government programs were the primary source of the destruction of the black family and the erosion of the dignity of the black men in particular in low-income urban areas. Good intentions ain't enough. The federal programs pushed out the church and destroyed many black communities. It took about 20 years to see the effects of well-intended but stupid government programs. The crazy notion that "we just need to get the right government program" is fantasy.

Thank you so much for this.

Great Clip. I was blown away by those statistics from Washington D.C. Could we also look at what has happened to the Indian populationon reservations as well?

This whole clip made me think that the best thing that George Bush ever did was the faith based initiative. Our church's woman's shelter opens in two weeks so I have a deep interest in this and we are trying to know the names of the poor which makes it deeply personal and dignifying for both parties.

I have my Food Pantry bible study today and the opportunity to preach the gospel to their needs and realize their spiritual pain screams as loud as their physical needs has been humbling.

Thanks for the post.

I've shared this with my pals over at Jesus Manifesto. Hopefully they will embrace it. I rarely see anything quite so compelling.
Thanks

Did you know...?

...students TRYING to take a GED readiness class were shoved into a makeshift classroom in a cafeteria ... are met with the lack of instruction as the teacher pass out packets of worksheets. Many of the students are not proficient readers and have trouble making it through the instructions on the top of the page. (One of the worksheets had a list of 25 words on one side and 25 badly worded definitions on the other side and the student was to match them up by drawing a line).

...the assignment called for looking up the words on the sheet using dictionaries. NONE were provided these students!

...the teachers were ill-prepared to teach this needy class, teachers make the students feel as if their presence is burden and their questions are not wanted.

...and these are institutions of higher learning??? many of our most needy schools have an extremely serious lack of available resources and qualified personnel!!!

...Justice would not be that the poor and ethnic minorities get the worst schooling. Justice would not be a denial of access to the library based on mistrust. Justice would not be ill prepared teachers and lack of basic materials... lack of materials and lack of engaged instruction is a clear example of institutional racism. GED classes in wealthier school districts with less of a poor, minority base are not this under resourced! There are many reasons and situations that contribute and shape this value system, issues that are directly related to social justice and resulting call for social change.. Justice and equality should be equal across ethnic and class lines....

A mind is a terrible thing to waste...

Dude, great stuff as usual. Acton really needs to partner with people outside the US to help bring even more global insight into the issues because it will only help in strengthening the message.

Communicating truth in an engaging way. Hopefully someone will listen

Great video. And my man John Nunes was involved? Dude his preaching almost has me in the LCMS! Sorry, good food for thought. Can I use this video on my blog?

A powerful clip. I must say it summarizes well that which I have seen working as a case worker primarily in the inner-city. You can see it impacting everyone regardless of race. In my estimation we cant just make those who are impoverished rely upon the state. To do so is degrading and disabling. The only solution is discipleship. The church and our culture has failed tragically to walk with those in need. Of course financial support is needed but to simply throw money at the poor ignores the depths of their struggle and demeans them as humans. They need our love not just our wallets.
