By MIKE MORRIS The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 11/19/07Acworth police Monday were investigating the alleged rape last week of an 11-year-old girl by 8- and 9-year-old playmates.
The mother of the victim reported the incident on Sunday, Acworth police Capt. Wayne Dennard said.
"The juvenile victim stated that an 8-year-old boy and two 9-year-old boys, that she had been playing with earlier, pulled her into a wooded area, where one of the boys raped her," Dennard said.
Dennard said the incident allegedly occurred on Thursday.
All three boys, whose names were being withheld because of their age, were taken into custody overnight and taken to the Cobb County Youth Detention Center, charged with rape, kidnapping, false imprisonment and sexual assault, Dennard said.
The masculine crisis.
Acworth is 28 miles north of Atlanta in the city's fast-growing outer suburbs. In the suburbs?

Posted by: bruce at November 19, 2007 01:25 PMAre Bruce's comments an inside joke that I'm not in on? Is this some kind of Chapelle-ish humor that I am too late on the scene to recognize as a joke?
I'm not familiar with the story, but do we even know what race the victim or her alleged assailants are?
Bruce,
If you aren't being funny (and it isn't funny), thank you for the helpful comments. Sometimes it helps people like myself that really want to get past their prejudice(s) to hear things said out loud. Ideas that float around in my head and never get said don't always seem as stupid or cruel or sinful as when they get said out loud. I read your comments and (like it or not) see shadows of myself. It shames me, turns my heart to repent, and helps me to glory in a cross that is so much bigger than my most horrible sins.
Just the same, I hope that you think you are being ironic, or funny, or something.
Posted by: randomguy at November 19, 2007 01:45 PMBruce, Acworth is 77% white, so odds are that at least one of the perps is "pigmentally challenged" like myself.
Eight or nine years old? I don't get it. I don't think my body would have done that at that age, and certainly my mind wasn't ready to think of it then.
Posted by: Robert Perry at November 19, 2007 02:27 PMIs it normal for an 8 or 9 year old to be able to do that?
And where were the parents/guardians of these boys? What on earth were they teaching--either by example or by omission?
Posted by: dramaturge at November 19, 2007 07:02 PMJeff Proctor makes an excellent point at his blog.
"The boys are being charged with rape, despite the seemingly understood (by all parties involved) fact that the girl did not object.
But Wilkie said children that young cannot legally consent to sex, “so we have to go with the charges we have.”
Here’s my question: If the girl cannot consent to sex, can the boys? That is, did they, legally, have sex with her? "
Why do we assume it is the boys who did the raping?
My guess is that the parents of all parties need to be held accountable, but to who?
Hey Anthony, I've a question for you that seems closely related to this sad story. A good friend is in charge of updating/revising the curriculum for a large program designed for boys (starting around age 5 & up through high school) and he asked me:
"If you could build a boy-specific, discipleship ministry within your cultural context that would best meet the needs of the boys in your church (or the ministry that you are associated with), what would it look like? What would they do, teach, learn?"
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts (and the other regulars that visit the blog so often) on this.
Posted by: Paul at November 21, 2007 04:07 PMBruce, You comment disgusts me, but as an intelligent person (which you clearly are not) I assume that creating disgust was your intention...or you are just wildly ignorant.
I know Acworth. I know the victims. Bruce, you are wrong about their race.
One officer said on the news that he was surprised this type of thing would happen in Acworth...Unfortunately it does not surprise me. This is not a sleepy, innocent village.
