Boston College beats Clemson at home, again, 20-17. Lots of people will be calling for Bowden to resign.
Clemson fans all over America are asking tonight if Clemson should fire Tommy Bowden. Yeah, Bowden's been there for 9 years. Yes, we've gone to 7 (irrelevant) bowl games. But the constant up-and-down seasons of absolutely inconsistency is making some of us wonder if it's even worth it to keep the guy.
Should we fire him and just start over and either be consistently bad or consistently good--but be consistent nonetheless.
Clemson's football coaching staff just can't ever seem to "finish the job."
Unbelievable. I'm going to have a bad week. I guarantee it.
Posted by anthony at November 17, 2007 11:59 PM | TrackBackdude, i wondered how long it would be before you posted this. I bet you crapped a brick when #80 dropped the pass on the 1 yrd. line!!!!
Posted by: Jeremy at November 18, 2007 02:20 PMAnthony- It could be worse. You could've watched your once amazing defense give up 76 points to freakin Kansas or 38 first half points to Oklahoma State... That said, I can see where you're coming from. Who do you think Clemson should go after if Bowden steps down? In Nebraska we're mainly talking about Pelini and Turner Gill but no one knows what Osborne will do. You've got a ton of great assistant coaches in the southeast though, so I'm sure you guys could land one of them. (Muschamp from Auburn, maybe?)
Posted by: jake meador at November 18, 2007 08:35 PMJeremy, I posted this seconds after our pathetic loss. There's a part of me hoping that Bowden will announce and early retirement from football and become an announcer or something. But again, this could just be frustration speaking! I'm sure he's actually a nice guy.
Posted by: Anthony at November 19, 2007 09:22 AMOuch, Jake, that's must be tough. I have no idea who might replace Bowden. The college world is so crazy right now with guys moving around. I have no idea.
BTW, I haven't forgotten about the e-mail you sent. I just haven't had time to respond but I hope to soon.
Posted by: Anthony at November 19, 2007 09:24 AMYes. Fire him. I am tired of the same excuses. We were so close, we catch a pass here and there, we are not that bad off we finish second and all the other excuses he has given the last couple of years. Bottom line he hasn't shown the ability to take the program to the next level. Terry Don Phillips needs to ftb, finish tommy bowden
Posted by: Brian at November 19, 2007 12:28 PMAnthony,
I feel your pain and I think you’ve great, but seriously fire Tommy Bowden? You could have it so much worse. You could be an Iowa fan.
We've watched the Hawkeyes go from finishing the season 8th in the nation 3 years in a row (02-04) to watching them barely win half their games the past three years- all with the highest paid coach in the Big10 (4th highest paid coach in the nation).
Fire Tommy Bowden after what will likely be a 9-3 season and a guaranteed bowl bid? We'll take him any day.
Well Darden...no offense....but Clemson has a lot more talent than Iowa right now. Iowa didnt have the Big Ten Championship in its grasps and let it slip away like Clemson has the past two years. Ive never heard of a team beating a ranked team like USC and a top 5 FSU team...and then losing to Duke in the same season. In other words, yes my vote is to fire him.
Posted by: Stephen at November 19, 2007 05:22 PMFair enough. Iowa was not up to Clemson's speed this year. But fire him? Really? I guess firing a coach with a winning season worked so well for Notre Dame?
Posted by: Darden Caylor at November 19, 2007 11:08 PM"Clemson is to college football what NC State is to college basketball -- an overrated program built to unrealistic heights by coaches who cheated, with an overbearing fan base too biased to see that reality."

Clemson has LOADS of young talent in place with an even more talented crop pledged to sign in February. It is scary what Clemson will likely become if people are patient with Tommy Bowden. I, as a USC fan, would love nothing more than to see them show Tommy the door and disrupt what I perceive to be a dynasty in the making. Oh, and compare Frank Beamer's record at VT at the same point in his career - it's not impressive at all. The failure of administrators and boosters to give coaches long enough to establish some continuity (i.e., longer than 5 years) is why the "wanna-bes" never catch up with the powerhouses.
