Fellas, over at Acton I wrote a little op-ed piece about Bill Cosby's new book.
Ninety-four percent of all blacks murdered are killed by other blacks. For many blacks, a Klu Klux Klan rally is a safer place than their own neighborhoods.--Anthony Bradley
I open the rant saying:
"Bill Cosby’s status as sage is confirmed by the release of his new book, co-authored with Dr. Alvin Poussaint of Harvard Medical School, Come On People: On The Path From Victims to Victors. Cosby and Poussaint remind us that black America’s hope for escape from abysmal self-destruction is moral formation -- not government programs or blaming white people."
The rest is here.
Wow, fellas you gotta make sure you read the comment by "M Charles". Whew!!
Posted by anthony at October 25, 2007 09:38 AM | TrackBackThanks. I liked M. Charles' claim about "Whitey" being the "ancestor" of the slavemasters. No way; I shudder to think what a lot of companies would do if we repealed the 13th Amendment. :^)
(OK, seriously, I know he probably meant "descendants," but I just couldn't resist)
I dream of the day that both the KKK and Al Sharpton get their well-deserved kick out of the public spotlight.
Posted by: Robert Perry at October 25, 2007 11:56 AMWhew, that's quite a dream!!
Posted by: Anthony at October 26, 2007 10:07 AMI just want to make sure I understand the quote. 94% of all murdered Black Americans are murdered/killed by another Black American. As it reads, it says "94% of all blacks are murdered..." But you mean, of those murdered, 94% were killed by another Black person. Because 94% of all Blacks aren't murdered, I don't think.
Posted by: scott Cunningham at October 26, 2007 10:39 AMScott, it's a typo. Thanks.
Posted by: Anthony at October 26, 2007 11:11 AMIt certainly is quite a dream, and believe it or not, the only intoxicating substance in my veins while dreaming that dream was caffeine. :^)
Posted by: Robert Perry at October 26, 2007 02:09 PMWell written article, Anthony. I have grown to truly respect Cosby over the years. His sitcom was a portrayal of a strong family led by an upstanding father. We need more television shows like that. he has furthered that encouragement with his words in the last few years. I wish the media would grovel over his words they way they do over the "Reverends'." When I have a break from school, I think Cosby's book might be the next I pick up.
Posted by: dramaturge at October 27, 2007 09:08 PMI saw an interview with him and the co-author on, I think, The Today Show. And after reading your (Anthony) article/review of the book, it sounds good. Here's my point, that seems to coflict with Cosby; several years ago, Cosby's wife wrote an article in Newsweek, (I think), about the prevalence of racism still today. Important side-note: the article was writen in partial response to their son being murdered. As evidence of racism still existing today, she wrote that by 2007, blacks could lose the right to vote again because The Voting Rights Act of 1965 will come up for revoting by Congress; because every some-odd-years, it has to be revoted on. It doesn't make sense? Cosby seems to be so right on, but his wife (her name has slipped my mind), made this grand assertion with no facts to back it up. (btw, the assertion was completely false. Even the US Dept. of Justice specifically addressed this rumor). If anybody is interested, I can find the article in Newsweek and the other articles that rebut this statement.
Posted by: Girl at October 28, 2007 09:01 PMHow long was this written after the murder of their son? If it were not terribly long after, I would giver her a lot of leeway. People tend to make very dogmatic, yet irrational statements out of grief.
