A few months ago I mentioned that I'll be blogging here a little less and here is the reason: I have weekly column over at World Magazine's new web-magazine. I think my columns will run on Wednesdays or Thursdays.

You can find it here at World On the Web.

Boston Beatdown II is actually a few years old, and generally speaking the hardcore scene isn't quite as brutal as the video would have you think. I've been to plenty of shows in Chicago and Cleveland for all sorts of hardcore bands, and the fights aren't all that common. I've only been to one show (out of hundreds) where a fight didn't stop the show. Interestingly enough, the band was from Boston. Generally, members of crews (like FSU) were the first to break up the fights.

Crews (which you refer to, and perhaps fairly given the hype around Boston Beatdown, as gangs) come in different varieties, from the highly organized to loose groups of friends, and both are generally focused on promoting shows, going to shows, and hanging out.

Additionally, hardcore, though largely made up of white males, has always had its share of other ethnic groups represented (Chicago has Los Crudos and Latino Hardcore, DC has Bad Brains), the regular occurrence of female hardcore fans, and a few movements that were entirely opposed to the violence described in Boston Beatdown.

All this to say, you're absolutely right in your assessment of modern Evangelical leaders as being "too soft, passive, and fearful" when it comes to evangelism to this culture. But then again, most modern Evangelical leaders aren't quite right for ministering to a variety of other subcultures either. I suppose it helps to love hardcore and think in terms of worldview conflict. While plenty of leaders are developing in the latter, and that can be more than enough to minister to any subculture, the former makes it a lot easier.
