Puerto Rico--In Praise of Briarwood Presbyterian Church, 7 years the search is over

(Jerry Rivera sings about Puerto Rico)

Fellas, many of know that I've been looking any evangelicals doing work on the island of Puerto Rico since 2000 when I went there for the first time. Just to get close, many of you will remember that I came close, several years ago, to moving to either Miami or Guatemala as well.

Well fellas, on Wednesday, my 7-year search came to an end. Briarwood Presbyterian Church has launched a major work in Puerto Rico. I couldn't believe it when I saw it. Finally, somebody cares about the island that means so much to the world. I have not been able figure out why it seems that evangelicals are completely disinterested in the Island. I don't have to ask the question anymore!

The new work is called:International Leadership Development Program, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The International Leadership Development Project (I.L.D.P.) is a training program that offers opportunities to grow via hands-on experience in a cross-cultural setting. It is a program committed to training those individuals who feel called to the mission field by strategically inserting them into a greenhouse environment as a catalyst for rapid yet enduring growth.

When I started looking in 2000 I couldn't find a major missions organization that was doing a thing on the island. I even contacted one major missions agency (that shall remain nameless) and they were completely disinterested (you see, Puerto Rico's not Mexico).

Hey, any church doing work in Puerto Rico is a friend of mine. Seven years. . .finalmente

Es posible que en el futuro mi vida sere muy differente.

(Amigos y hermanos, Jose, Juan, Pablo, y otros hablaremos pronto)

In all seriousness, why does this island mean so much to the rest of the world? I've known about your interest in Puerto Rico in the past, but never really knew why you were so interested.

Anthony, we've got a guy from our church who's down in Puerto Rico with ILDP. I'm sure they'll be thrilled to get the press...

"Hector Lavoe y Antonio Bradley una alma unidad."

Haha! Exacto!!

Puerto Rico important to the world? HA HA HA.

Puerto Ricans are useless and os is Puerto Rico.

While hesitant to follow up that last absurd comment with one that appears to even partially come from the same direction, and while acknowledging that there was something pretty drastically wrong with NO stateside evangelicals doing ANYTHING in Puerto Rico, I do have to echo the question of why Puerto Rico "means so much to the world." It seems like a small Caribbean Island with a few million people. There are lots of nations (or however you're supposed to refer to PR as a distinct entity) with a few million people that aren't generally considered to "mean so much to the world." So I'm just curious because it's not obvious to me -- I'm not really disputing it because I don't know much about it.

Would you all join me in saying "Goodbye" to Phil M. He's done here. Altogether now, "Phil M., farewell."

Posted by: Anthony at August 25, 2007 12:17 AM

Hey pentamom... we Are Christians here... Maybe we should let Phil speak. Give him a chance to explain himself & ask questions. We've all got to "work it out" & be able to ask questions.
We all can't figure it all out on the first try. Grace, you know.

Anthony, you know Jason Tucker- his wife- Suzie, my good friend, is 100% Bonified PUERTO RICAN. They will DEFINATELY want to hear all about any ministry in PR. As do I. My husband's never had a class with you. But would like to. Anyway, Happy for you... Still want to know more about the genesis of your PR passion, And your Plans/timeline. Exciting!

Oops, sorry! It's often easy to read the "Posted By"s backwards... as if Phil wrote "while hesitant" & Pentamom wrote "goodbye." Not the first time I've read them in reverse. Sorry.

Anybody else ever have this problem?

Posted by: Jenny Shain at August 25, 2007 01:43 AM

The problem with banning Phil W is he'll just come back under another name.

Why do we need to be questioning the global importance of Puerto Rico? Should the fact that they are people living on this earth not be enough for us to extend the gospel and the kingdom of God to them as well?

Posted by: Jake at August 26, 2007 09:21 AM

Jake, please, do us all a favor and get off your high horse. Your question has nothing to do with a country's global importance. No one has suggested that less important countries on a global scale are unworthy of the gospel. Maybe I should have Christianized my first question and included a clause like "Even though all countries are important from God's eyes, Anthony, why do you think Puerto Rico is globally important?" I guess I just thought adding the obvious was unnecessary because, well, it's obvious. I was wrong.

Posted by: Paul Franks at August 26, 2007 01:16 PM

Paul, in no way did I mean that question to read arrogantly. My question was just a result of how I read the comments thus far...obviously different than how you intended your question to read. My sincerest apologies for that.

Posted by: Jake at August 26, 2007 08:11 PM

I guess that's one of the downfalls of having discussions online. There's a lot more to dialogue than just the words spoken. Sorry for jumping at you there, I just got through speaking with a guy that wouldn't get around the Christianese and be real with me. I guess I was just fed up and jumped at the opportunity to vent. My bad.

Posted by: Paul Franks at August 26, 2007 08:24 PM

I hear you, Paul. This online stuff can be tricky. No worries.

That's awesome that a church is doing ministry to Puerto Rico! I once knew a Lutheran dude who would go to Haiti on missions trips; talk about risky!

Posted by: Tyler at August 27, 2007 01:01 AM

I was just curious about why Anthony said that, is all. Asking why he thought it was specially important was in no way intended to diminish the worthiness of discussing it. Frankly, I was wondering whether he was going to explain something I didn't know about Puerto Rico that would cause me to realize why it was globally important. Not all questions should be read as hostile cross-examinations -- sometimes they're just requests for missing information.

Posted by: pentamom at August 27, 2007 01:09 PM

Christians talk of global importance all the time...i.e. "we are going to reach Lawrenceville, Atlanta, and then the world."

It's Buzz Light Year talk: "To Infinity and Beyond." Vision statements can be ridiculous and they are written in mega conquering terms.

But I must admit I'm dumbfounded. How can you all not see that Puerto Rico is the next emerging world super power?

Posted by: berkeleyrican at August 27, 2007 03:12 PM

Anthony, is a guy named Rush from Bham signed up with the PR team? I hear he is a great guy. And he has a cool name. I will (hopefully) be speaking to some folks at Briarwood at the end of September about my ministry.
Hope you will re-consider Bham as actually a great place. Some of the sweetest people in the world live there : ) I promise. You'll see : )

Are you moving to PR? My husband & I were going to audit a class from you... not sure what your prof-ing & missions schedule is.

Obviously, your fans want details!
PS: Suzie & Jason Tucker said they didnt hear you say anything about the PR... they want to know.

Posted by: Jenny Shain at August 28, 2007 02:04 AM

So I'm checking this late, but did want to add that MTW also has some folks there (recently) working with Briarwood and doing some other things on the side. Praise God for PR! Can't wait to see what happens in that beautiful place.
