Fellas, thoughts on Falwell's legacy?
I've got one thing to say in light of the Reagan presidency: "Thank God for Baptists!"

Posted by: Juan Callejas at May 16, 2007 12:00 AMYeah, mixed is correct! He did AMAZING things in the 1970s and 1980s specifically. And getting Liberty University off the ground will be a part of his lasting legacy!
Posted by: anthony Bradley at May 16, 2007 09:25 AMJerry was a giant of a man who did more for the cause of Christ than most. Did he make mistakes? Sure he is human. But he was a good friend and a giant of a man.

Posted by: Scott Jordan at May 16, 2007 10:01 AMFalwell made the fatal error of...
admitting Toby Mac, Michael Tait and Kevin Max to Liberty...
but really,
he mixed religion and politics. He could have advocated that Christians work to limit the scope of the state and do whatever good needs to be done themselves, without resorting to the use of coercive political mechanisms, but instead he worked to try and make America a Theocracy of some sort.
Eschatology matters.
Posted by: juris naturalist at May 16, 2007 11:05 PMYes, eschatology matters, but let's keep in mind that Falwell never advocated a theocracy (he rightly left that to the theonomists), and himself predicted that he'd be on the losing end of the social wars until (in his words) "Jesus comes back and straightens things out."
In other words, JN, be careful about taking your talking points from the MSM, who never understood him and rarely quoted him significantly.
