This is a sad story.
These kids are ruined. Read about it here.
MCDONOUGH, Ga. (FOX 5) – A McDonough couple was arrested and charged with child cruelty for the way they disciplined their adopted children. Police said a 13-year-old girl and her 11-year-old brother were forced to run at least a mile a day or face punishment.

Posted by: jeb at August 10, 2007 10:11 AM??? Somehow the story doesn't quite explain to me what the charges are about. So forcing the children to get some exercise constitutes child abuse these days?
I can understand that if the belt/bat were used to injure the children, abuse did occur. I just don't get why they led with the running thing.
(if making kids get exercise constitutes abuse, we need MORE abusers in this country)

They're 13 and 11. A mile a day is one thing, I suppose, but this quote is what really disturbed me: "Well, the 15 laps, according to our investigation, is approximately one mile long and they were forced to run up to 50 and sometimes 100 laps in one day and if they didn't, they were punished." That's between 3 and 6.5 miles or so.
A little kid's body isn't made for that, especially if this all started four years ago, and especially if they were doing this every single day. I was on track in 7th grade; I was 12 then and already in good shape from being on a swim team. We practiced 5 days a week and ran nowhere near 6 miles a day. My parents wouldn't have dreamed of hitting me with a bat just because I didn't make the time they expected of me or because I left track practice early one day. This is insane.
Posted by: Vida at August 10, 2007 09:25 PMI also ran track at age 11, and 3-5 miles each day wasn't that uncommon, actually. I knew kids that ran more than that.
My take is that the abuse occurred when the ball bat came out, not when the parents told the kid to run. It's misleading to lead the story with the former instead of the latter.
Posted by: Robert Perry at August 13, 2007 12:39 PMReally? Perhaps I'm misremembering my track days (it's depressing that now I run about two miles every other day, and I'm still so out of shape that I keep hoping I croak in midstride). And yes, I agree that it's pulling the bat out that tips it over the edge into abuse territory. But really, what better way to ensure that your kids loathe a certain activity for the rest of their days? Why not put them on a sports team or engage them in strenuous but fun and/or productive activities at home (soccer, tag, yardwork, etc)?
Posted by: Vida at August 14, 2007 12:01 AMVida, I'll agree with everything you said in that last post; the fact remains, however, that it is in the domain of "is this effective or ineffective parenting," not "this is abuse."
Posted by: Robert Perry at August 14, 2007 12:07 PMJEB- If you think making a child at the age of 11 and 13 years old is normail then your wrong! and as a matter of fact no we dont need more abuses u idiot!
