Tiger Woods And His Wife Now Have A Daughter, Should He Retire From Golf?

tiger woods baby.jpg

At Tigerwoods.com you can catch the shots of Tiger's new kid: Sam Alexis Woods.

I wonder how this is going to change how he trains/practices/plays, etc. He's on the road constantly. Practices hours and hours per day. Pro golf marriages don't have the best histories (Fred Couples, John Daly, etc.).

How is he going to do this? I do give him props for missing the Buick Open to stay at home with the fam.

Well, he certainly could retire from golf if he wanted to... Cashing in on his royalties and sponsorships alone would carry his family through the rest of their lives...

Or, they could do what some more successful golf/sports families have done--travel together.

What a gorgeous family!

Yes! Retire with your megabucks, Tiger, and be a father to your child! It's funny, my dad was very rarely with me throughout childhood, and the spans of time he WAS there, I hardly can remember his face in that place.

Been lurking for a while, but never commented before...

I don't see why Tiger should quit his job because he's now a father. Fatherhood and vocation were never intended to be at odds with one another, but to work together and be in proper balance.

Dramaturge has it right -- take the kid on tour. Most if not all of the negatives of instability are pretty much bought off if you've got the Woods family fortune. You can arrange to stay in homelike places, have well-paid and consistent child-care when necessary, and when the child is old enough for education, his very own fully credentialed, handpicked tutor. Plus, he gets to travel the world with Mom and Dad, probably seeing Dad more than the average child of even a committed, available breadwinner Dad. I don't see a downside.

Sure, when the child was being born and neither baby nor mother was ready to travel, it made sense for him to "take leave" and stay home with them. But once the baby is old enough to safely travel, I see absolutely no reason why Dad should cease to pursue his other calling in life because he has a child. A child who has a Dad who effectively combines fatherhood and vacation is even more benefitted than one whose Dad sacrifices everything to be a father. A kid needs to learn the balance by example, not be presented with a life example of a false choice.
