America, we need to examine the fallacious proposition that "sport builds character." Is that true? Carlton Dotson has been charge for the murder of his former teammate Patrick Dennehy. The details of this story have yet to be discerned but we this type of behavior should only be suprising if we think that sport has the presuppostional foundation to produce individuals with true character. There is only one way to produce men and women of true character and sport is not it.
What happened to turns these guys, who have been surrounded by the institution of sport, to turn into the kind of people who threaten each others lives with guns as Dotson alleges? Well, we know the answer to this don't we? It wasn't so much that they had sport as it was the fact that they lacked something crucial to direct and form their character as atheletes and person. I wonder if Christians sometimes are even able to discern what that is?
Posted by anthony at July 22, 2003 09:22 PM | TrackBackNo, sport isn't the primary way to build character, but it doesn't necessarily lead to bad character, either. There are some good things that can come from participating in sports if the focus isn't on things like seeking fame and fortune. Learning to work with and get along with others (teamwork) and taking care of your physical body are good things, right?
